Earlier on this topic (2018 Q3) it was advised to re-name the indices folder in the ..\cognos\analytics\data\search folder and re-start the IBM Cognos service.

This is not working anymore. Also the cm and mo folders are no longer located in indices but...

You could create a row counter data item e.g. running-total([Data Item]) which gives you a number för each row.
You can also create a layout calculation using the RowNumber() function.
